Agroforestry is considered one of the best ways to marry both cocoa and tree regeneration (forests reserves or farmlands). Some companies are partnering with government institutions to replant degraded reserves using Modified Taungya Systems. Others are focusing on intensive on-farm tree planting; trying to restore the landscape to what it looked like in the past. Not only will more carbon sinks be created for carbon offsetting (and or insetting) for companies aiming for net zero emissions or being carbon neutral but the ecosystem regeneration is expected to restore micro and macro climatic conditions which favors cocoa production and biodiversity. In the year 2020 alone about 6 million trees were distributed to cocoa farmers with the support of companies via NGOs.

At GaiaCare, our commitment is to balance the protection, restoration, and development of these natural landscapes with the benefits (carbon sinks, good soils, water, clean air, timber, etc.)  we derive from them. In simpler words, “not biting the hand that feeds thousands of households” and also not sacrificing short-term gains over long-term benefits. We look forward to partnerships with companies and organisations that are earth-conscious and want to take steps to attain carbon neutrality or net zero emissions. Organisations in the cocoa and palm supply chains are interested in in-setting their emissions via intensive agroforestry projects with farmers and communities within their supply chain.
