Agroforestry has proven to be mutually beneficial to farmers, the environment and other stakeholders in the supply chain. Farmers in the cocoa, palm and cashew supply chains are able to protect their cocoa, ensuring sustained production, and get additional ecosystem benefits from trees on farms. Companies are able to prove that their demand does not cause deforestation in sensitive production zones.
At GaiaCare, we employ variations of Climate Smart Agriculture and Dynamic Agroforestry to manage and mitigate the impacts of Climate change on production landscapes while ensuring sustained production and livelihoods. We promote biodiversity by encouraging the planting of a variety of trees (with different growth rates and uses) on farms to ensure landscape protection and additional ecosystem services to the landowner or farmer. This approach ensures that farmers are able to produce higher quantities within limited spaces without having to expand farms into protected areas; risking arrest and further land degradation. This further reduces carbon emissions and increases carbon sinks for sequestration while biodiversity improves resilience of crops to pests, diseases and other shocks.
For companies looking forward to offsetting (outside their supply chain), we facilitate cooperation on projects that ensure carbon valorization in the medium to long term, and benefits to rural communities, farmers as well as the environment. We are interested and able to secure and restore degraded landscapes that ascribes these benefits to interested stakeholders.
Our team has close to 15 years of experience in implementing such successful interventions across various cocoa landscapes in Ghana and pledges to further the cause of protecting the environment and supporting improvement in the livelihoods of farmers.
